A true garden rescue story.
This project begins with a busy mom of 3 and her desire to grow a better garden than her last one.
Tahira’s first year of gardening in her south Austin home was met with a lot of disappointment. The story includes a broken garden bed and eggplants that never made it. In her journey to a better garden, she learned that the design she had was no good, her sloped space was a problem, her soil needed improvement, and she also found us.
Overwhelmed by all there is to know about growing food at home, she was ready to make the most of the warm growing season.
In late winter 2021, she called us for a consult and we developed a beautiful design that makes the most out of this challenging space. It is a very particular rectangle wedged next to a deck up against her home, and it’s very, very sloped. But it’s a place with the best sun for a garden! We provided two custom, level twin beds in a terrace style, an arched trellis in between, and a custom drip irrigation system so in her busy life, maintaining the garden isn’t as much of a chore.
Just look how we transformed her space!
And the process was a fun one. She was ready for a change and a beautiful, thriving garden….
Last year's sad, broken garden
We designed two solid cedar beds made custom to fit her space and prepped the area level, which was a dramatic hill.
Having a level bed is so important!
We filled the beds with our top quality custom soil that will grow happy plants
Consistent, deep watering is key in a kitchen garden. So we installed a custom designed drip irrigation system on a timer, so Tahira doesn't have to remember to water and her plants get water when they need it.
The star of the show has to be this heavy duty trellis arch between both beds to hold some of the family's favorite foods: cucumber, tomatoes and melon!
Vertical space adds so many possibilities to a kitchen garden. This garden will hold up to about 30 large plants; fruits, veggies and herbs!
By early May, growth is exploding!
Cucumbers, eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, herbs and flowers galore!
So much organic eats to enjoy, right outside her backdoor.
Such an improvement in her space. The terraced twin design is thriving and there's even more growth to come!
